Class Introduction
This six-session course is designed to teach students how to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) tools into their academic and English writing processes responsibly, effectively, and ethically. Students will learn about academic dishonesty, common school policies regarding AI usage, how AI detection tools work, and strategies for using AI tools legally and effectively to develop their English writing skills. This course will empower students to harness the potential of AI tools to improve their English writing skills. By understanding both the capabilities and limitations of AI, students will be well-equipped to navigate the evolving landscape of writing in the digital age.
Teacher Background
Former English teacher at top boarding schools such as Tabor Academy and Cushing Academy, with nearly 30 years of experience in English education. Holds a Master’s degree in English and American Literature from Harvard University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from Bowdoin College.
Outcome
After completing the course, students will:
- Understand the concept of academic integrity and dishonesty.
- Learn about school policies and rules regarding AI usage in academic work.
- Gain insight into how AI detection tools evaluate AI-generated content.
- Use AI tools to brainstorm, draft, and refine English writing, enhancing vocabulary, grammar, and style.
- Engage in a peer review segment where students review each other’s writing to assess the effectiveness of AI assistance and whether it violates certain rules from the school.
- Develop strategies to integrate AI responsibly and effectively into the learning process.
Feedback
Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class, regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on homework assignments via email.
