Leonard L. Milberg’53/Leonard Milberg High School Poetry Prize

The Leonard Milberg High School Poetry Prize recognizes outstanding work by student writers in the 11th grade in the U.S. or abroad. Contest judges are poets on the Princeton University Creative Writing faculty, which includes Michael Dickman, Paul Muldoon, Rowan Ricardo Phillips, James Richardson, Tracy K. Smith, Susan Wheeler, Jenny Xie, and Monica Youn.

1. Prizes
Certificates of participation will not be given; only prize winners and honorable mentions will be recognized. Only prize winners and honorable mentions will be contacted directly; winners’ names will be published on the contest’s webpage.

  • First Prize — $1,500
  • Second Prize — $750
  • Third Prize — $500

Submission Details

Submission Deadline: June 10, 2024.

  • Poems submitted can also be entered in other contests.
  • Poems that have won other contests are allowed.
  • Previously published poems are permitted (must provide reference details).
  • Each student can submit up to 3 poems

Submission Guidelines: Students may submit up to 3 poems. Submissions for the poetry contest be poems that are currently submitted to and/or have won in other contests.

Prizes: First Prize – $500, Second Prize – $250, Third Prize – $100

Deadline: Submissions were due by November 26 for the 2023-24 contest. 2024-2025 contest deadline hasn’t been updated.
