The Interlochen Review is an online literary journal crafted by the creative writing students at Interlochen Arts Academy. The journal welcomes talented high school writers, singer-songwriters, and artists (grades 9-12 or postgraduate high school year) from around the globe to submit their work.

Submission Requirements

1. Writing and Songs

Applicants may submit up to six pieces in total, each uploaded individually. The following categories are accepted:

  • Fiction—Each story must be under 5,000 words, but flash fiction is welcome. Each story should be submitted and uploaded individually as a .docx file.
  • Poetry — Accepts long-form and prose poems. Each poem should be submitted and uploaded individually as a .docx file.
  • Nonfiction – Each essay must have a word count below 5,000 words. Lyric essays and flash essays are welcome. Each essay should be submitted and uploaded individually as a .docx file.
  • Hybrid Genres – Work that subverts genre distinctions or does not fit into other categories is welcome. This may include film essays/poems, photo essays, new media writing, performance documentation, mixed-media experiments, or any other hybrid work. Each hybrid genre piece should be submitted and uploaded individually in one of the following formats: .docx, PDF, .mp3, .mp4, .mov, or .jpeg.
  • Songs – Singer-songwriters may submit original songs in either audio (.mp3) or video (.mp4 or .mov) format. Submissions will be published along with their lyrics.
  • Scripts/Screenplays – Scripts should be under 40 pages in standard manuscript format and under 40 pages in standard screenplay format. Screenplays should be submitted as . PDF files, while scripts should be submitted as .docx files. Each script or screenplay should be uploaded individually.

2. Visual Arts

Below are the rules for the Individual Visual Arts submissions:

  • Students are limited to 10 visual arts submissions in total. Sizing: 300 dpi and no larger than 8″ x 10″.
  • Each submission must be uploaded separately in one of the following formats: .jpeg, .tif, .PDF, .mp4, or .mov.
  • The medium(s) used to create each piece must be listed.
  • Any medium is accepted, including 2D or 3D artwork that is photographed. Art films or video documentation are welcome.
  • Black and white or full-color submissions are welcome.
  • Please refer to the portfolio submission guidelines below for those interested in submitting a visual arts portfolio instead of individual pieces.
  • Pieces submitted in portfolios may also be submitted individually.

Visual Arts Portfolios

  • Students wishing to submit a portfolio of up to 20 pieces of artwork connected aesthetically and/or thematically should use the Visual Arts Portfolio category.
  • Only one Visual Arts Portfolio submission is allowed per student.
  • All pieces in the portfolio should be uploaded as a single submission.
  • Submissions in portfolios must be 300 dpi and no larger than 8″ x 10″.
  • Portfolio submissions can be uploaded in .jpeg, .tif, .PDF, .mp4, or .mov file formats.
    Each piece’s title and the medium(s) used to create it should be included in the file name (e.g., “Overflow (oil on wood).jpeg”).
  • Any medium is accepted, including 2D or 3D artwork that is photographed. Art films or video documentation are welcome.
    Black and white or full-color submissions are welcome.
  • All portfolios must include an artistic statement explaining the aesthetic and/or thematic connections within the portfolio and describing the themes or artistic processes explored in the collection.

3. Other rules

  • All submissions must be accompanied by a brief author or artist bio. Please ensure that your name is not included anywhere in the submission except in the bio statement.
