About the LSESU Economics Society Essay Competition
Hosted by the LSESU Economics Society, the largest academic society at LSE with over 800 members, this annual competition enjoys strong support from LSE’s Department of Economics. It encourages students worldwide to engage with current issues and apply their economic knowledge in thought-provoking essays. Winners also have the added honor of receiving a certificate signed by a Nobel Laureate in Economics, amplifying the value of this award in the academic world.
Eligibility:
Open to high school juniors and seniors worldwide, as well as students who have been accepted to universities this year.
2024 Competition Deadline: July 30, 2024, 11:59 PM GMT+1 (July 31, 6:59 AM in Beijing; July 30, 6:59 PM in Eastern Time).
2024 Essay Topics (Choose 1):
- The Financial sector deals with a significant moral hazard, since portfolio managers cannot be held accountable for poor investment performance. This is often used as justification for higher pay and bonuses in the finance sector. With reference to this, what is the impact of bonus caps on the financial sector?
- How does the adoption of AI technology affect differences in rates of development across nations?
- Do election cycles affect economic policy making and financial markets?
- What are the economic effects of gentrification on urban communities?
- How can micro financing affect climate refugees in developing countries?
- Should social welfare maximization be the focus of all policy-making efforts?
Submission Guidelines
- All entries must be individual and created specifically for the competition. Here’s what participants needed to know:
- Language: English only
- Word Count: Up to 1,500 words (excluding citations)
- Format: Times New Roman, 12-point font
- Citation Style: Any common academic format (MLA, APA, Harvard)
- File Naming: FirstName_LastName_Question_x
Plagiarism and AI-generated answers are strictly prohibited. All entries will be screened through Turnitin. Judging criteria include originality, argument quality, writing quality, and evidence strength.
