Class Introduction
This course provides students with an introduction to the two categories of the David McCullough Essay Competition: the interpretive essay and the research essay. We will discuss and practice formulating research questions, conducting sound research, organizing information, evaluating source material, and writing well-researched, well-argued essays.
Outcome
- Develop advanced research and analytical skills essential for crafting high-quality essays on American history.
- Gain a deep understanding of historical topics from 1491 to 2001, exploring primary and secondary sources.
- Learn effective writing techniques to convey their ideas clearly, persuasively, and stylistically.
- Feel confident and well-prepared for the David McCullough Essay Prizes.
Instructor Information
A renowned history professor from a prestigious public university in the United States, with nearly 25 years of teaching experience and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Florida. She is the recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award from the American Teachers Association.
Class Schedule
2 group classes (2 hours/class) and 6 one-on-one classes (1 hour/class): 10 hours of classes in total
Feedback
Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on graded assignments via email.
