Young Reporters for the Environment Competition is operated by Foundation for Environmental Education. YRE gives young people aged 11-25 a platform to research environmental issues and promote solutions through investigative reporting, photography, and video journalism.

Competition Details
1. Competition Structure
There are three ways to participate in the YRE International Competition: General YRE International Competition, Litter Less Campaign Competition, and International Collaboration.
- General YRE International Competition: open to participants from all countries that run the YRE program.
- Litter Less Campaign Competition: Parallel to the International Competition is the Litter Less Campaign Competition that is open to the following countries currently participating in the Litter Less Campaign: Australia, New Zealand, China, India, Wales, Spain, Northern Ireland, Malta, France, Brazil, and Ireland.
- International Collaboration: This is open to participants in all countries! We recommend that submissions relate to pollution, biodiversity loss, and/or climate change and clearly connect to one or more Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
2. Young Reporters for the Environment Competition Categories
Theme: Ecosystem Restoration.
Submission Categories:
- Article: Newspaper articles or columns (online/print), OR Blog posts or long social media posts (e.g., Facebook)
- Video: Long-form Reportage [max 3 mins] (documentary, news report on Youtube or Vimeo) OR Short-form Campaign (TikTok, Youtube Shorts, Instagram Reels)
- Photo: One Take Photo (previously known as the single reportage photo)OR Staged Campaign Photo OR Photo Story (3-5 photos)
Podcast: Open for national competitions, with winners eligible for the Gosia Luszczek Podcasting Award
3. Timeline
- International Deadline for Competition Submissions: April 30, 2025
- Shortlisting and International Jury Meeting: Early June 2025
- Announcement of 2024/2025 International Competition Winners: Mid-June 2025
4. Prizes
The winners will receive diplomas, and the winning entries will be published internationally on online platforms such as Medium, We Don’t Have Time, and Youth Climate Report (for videos only). The 1st place winners will also be published on the YRE International website.
Submission Details
Submission Deadline: June 10, 2024.
All submissions must meet the following criteria:
- Include the following details:
- Name of author(s)
- Age of author(s) on the day of submission to the National Competition
- Name of registered school or group
- Country of residence
- Title of entry
- Link(s) to dissemination (e.g., where the work has been published or shared)
- Fulfill Category-Specific Requirements:
- Adhere to the Format & Structure and Dissemination criteria specific to the chosen media category (Article, Photo, Video, Podcast).
- Language:
- Must be in written and/or spoken English, or include English subtitles for non-English content.
- Content Focus:
- Address real and current local environmental issues with a connection to the global context.
- Present constructive solutions, supported by credible sources such as local stakeholders, experts, or academic research.
- Citations and Credits:
- Include credits, footnotes, or a bibliography for any images, video footage, music, or information not created by the students.
- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
- Identify and briefly explain how the submission relates to one or more Sustainable Development Goals.
- While submissions can focus on any SDG, they must always maintain an environmental perspective.
