Class Introduction
Welcome to our 10-week program, which consists of weekly 90-minute instruction and guidance designed to prepare your students for a successful and enriching experience studying in the United States! This course is specifically tailored for incoming middle and high school students, focusing on crucial skills that will enable them to thrive both academically and socially in their new environment. Our primary goal is to equip your children with the tools necessary for effective communication, encompassing both peer and teacher interactions. We will explore the nuances of casual conversation and the expectations of formal, academic discourse, providing a clear understanding of how communication styles shift across different school and social settings. By the end of this program, your students will be better prepared to confidently engage in conversations, express their ideas clearly, and effectively navigate the social and academic landscape of their American school experience. Our class will provide a fun and engaging environment!

Outcome
Upon completion of this course, students will have developed a foundational understanding of effective communication within the American middle and high school environment. Specifically, you will be able to confidently:
- Engage in both casual and professional conversations with peers and teachers. This includes recognizing and adapting to different communication styles appropriate for classroom settings, social gatherings, and more formal interactions, such as meetings 3with counselors and administrators.
- asking effective questions in the classroom and being confident in doing so
- Knowing how to seek clarification effectively in lectures, office hours, and group discussions
- Using the correct tone and language in informal and social settings with peers and teachers. This will allow students to engage in productive and respectful communication, fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment
- Writing proper emails and online communication with those in their learning environment
With these skills, the students will be able to advocate for their own learning needs, participate actively in class, and build meaningful relationships with members of their learning community.
Feedback
Students and their parents will receive brief feedback after each class regarding the student’s general participation in class. Students will also receive feedback on graded assignments via email.
