What Is a Snow Day?
A snow day is a day when school is canceled, closed, or delayed due to severe winter weather, such as an excessive amount of snow, icy roads, or extreme cold, etc. Snow days are announced either early morning or the day before by the school, the school district, or the college via emails, phone calls or annoucements to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff who regularly commute to school. Snow day is determined by several factors depending on the schools, but common factors are the ability of people to safely commute to classes, the school’s ability to handle the weather conditions, the level of preparation by the city, etc.
For students, school closing means an unexpected day off—a chance to relax or catch up on schoolwork. But how can students make the most of it? Here are some ideas for making the most of your day off:
Relax and Recharge
With this rare day off, it may be best to give your body and mind a break from morning classes, homework, and other responsibilities. A quick rest can help you feel refreshed and ready for the next day. Some common activities students can do with the time are catching up on their favorite movies or TV shows, sleeping in, taking a long nap, reading a book, or spending time with family and friends.
Catch Up on Homework
For students who are not used to the college workload, snow days are also a perfect time to catch up on schoolwork, such as completing assignments that are due soon or studying for upcoming tests. Some students also use this time to review class notes or textbooks to reinforce what they have learned. You’ll feel accomplished and less stressed when school resumes.

Try Something New
A snow day can be a good opportunity to start picking up a new hobby or learn something new that you’ve meant to do. With nothing to stress about for the day, you can dedicate time to activities you are interested in! Some ideas include trying new cooking and baking recipes, starting a DIY project, learning a new skill, or simply journaling.
Stay Active Indoors
Just because it’s snowy outside doesn’t mean you can’t stay active and energized! A snow day is the perfect opportunity to get moving indoors. You can start with a home workout or a calming yoga session to stretch and strengthen your body. For a quick burst of activity, try simple indoor exercises like jumping jacks, sit-ups, or stretching to keep your body active. Staying active indoors not only keeps you fit but also helps beat the winter blues.
