1. What is a Psychiatrist?

We have covered the overview of psychiatrists and what they do for a living in the How to Become a Psychiatrist: Detailed Guide to Jumpstart from High School article. To summarize, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health, recognizing its crucial impact on overall well-being. Their primary role is to listen to patients, diagnose mental health issues, and develop personalized treatment plans. As societal awareness of mental health grows, the demand for psychiatrists has increased, making it a promising career path.

2. Step by Step Guide to Start a Career in Psychiatry

To become a psychiatrist, you must complete 12 years of study, including 4 years of undergraduate study, 4 years of Medical school, and 4 years of residency.

Step 1: Earn a Bachelor’s Degree and Complete Medical School Prerequisites

In undergraduate, students are not required to enroll in a very specific major to become a psychiatrist as long as it is leaning toward medical school. Some students start by majoring in psychology, some could go into chemistry, some could go into biology; all in all, the major you choose can be very flexible. While physics and mathematics are not necessarily a part of your job, it is required in every student’s curriculum. During these four years, you may also find opportunities to join programs that help give you a better understanding of psychology, while also giving you some experience. You may also try to find some internships, just to get a feel for your career.

Step 2: Take the MCAT Test

After you have received your bachelor’s degree, the first major obstacle is going to be the Medical College Admissions Test, which is abbreviated as the MCAT. If you get past this, you’ll then be able to choose which path of medicine you want to follow; that is, you will start working on your M.D. or your D.O.. An M.D.’s approach to medicine is one where you focus on singular symptoms and their causes. On the other hand, doctors of the D.O. treat the body as a whole, rather than focusing on singular symptoms.

Step 3: Graduate From a Medical School

Once you pass the MCAT test and get into a medical school, the four years are broken up into two parts: the first and final years. During the first two years, you will be primarily learning within classrooms, where you will learn about anatomy, chemistry, medical ethics, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. These subjects will all naturally revolve around the human body, and it is primarily here that you learn exactly what to look for and analyze. You will also be in laboratories to physically see demonstrations of what you’re learning or demonstrate your understanding of the subject. After these two years, you begin your clinical practice, where, under the guidance of more experienced doctors, you will finally be able to practice your field. In these two years, you will also give you the preliminary start in preparation for your residency, where you truly master your craft.

Step 4: Complete Your Medical Residency

In residency, you will truly master your field. This is done through experience working in a hospital, where you work diagnosing patients of the more common issues that people suffer from, such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic disorder, depression, etc. This usually last for four years. However, in special cases when you want to go into a more specific and niche field, you may have to join a fellowship, where a more senior doctor supervises your work as you learn more about said field.

Step 5: Obtain a Medical License

After you complete these years of rigorous study, the final step to take is to complete certifications that demonstrate your understanding, mastery, and ability in your field. For psychiatry, you must pass USMLE if you are studying for an MD, and a COMLEX-USA if you are studying for a DO. Beyond these tests, you may have to apply for a state’s license, as each state has specific legislation. And, finally, you must get certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. This certification does have to be renewed every decade, but that’s to be expected from such a prestigious field. Regardless, with proper preparation and ambition, you should be fine.
