STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Summer Internships
University of California Santa Cruz has a summer-long (10 weeks) research internship program for high school students in STEM fields. High school students have the chance to receive one-on-one mentoring with UCSC faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers.
High school students who are interested in STEM fields and research are highly encouraged to participate in this program. Students are participating in real and existing research projects at UCSC, not made-up projects.
Students are required to be at least 14 years of age on the program start date and be currently enrolled in high school. Accepted students are normally from the Bay Area high school, but out-of-area students who have local housing are also encouraged to apply.
The application will open on March 1, 2024, at 8 AM PDT and closes on March 31, 2024
The Zuckerman Institute’s Brain Research Apprenticeships in New York at Columbia (BRAINYAC) program is a NYC high school internship. The internship prepares today’s youth to become tomorrow’s scientists. Each student is matched with a Columbia neuroscientist, a mentor who guides the student through a research project. Interns come away from the experience with an enhanced understanding of how laboratory research leads to transformative discovery, exposure to a professional academic environment, and a stronger connection to science as a career. Applicants must reside in New York City, preference is given to students in upper Manhattan and South Bronx.

BTI, Cornell University, and the USDA invite local high school students to participate in the seven-week internship in the fields of plant genome research, bioinformatics, and science communications. The internship runs from June to August. To be eligible, students must currently reside in the Ithaca region or surrounding counties and live within a reasonable daily commute to Cornell University. Selected students will receive an educational stipend of $4,200 for the program. Students cannot be graduating seniors and must be 16 years or older to be eligible to apply.

NASA internships and fellowships leverage NASA’s unique missions and programs to enhance and increase the capability, diversity, and size of the nation’s future science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce. Internships are available from high school to the graduate level. Internships provide students with the opportunity to participate in either research or other experiential learning, under the guidance of a mentor at NASA. In order to apply for this opportunity, students have to be at least 16 years of age and full-time students.

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Scholars Program offers stipend-paid summer internship opportunities to upper-level high school students pursuing STEM degrees. Students gain hands-on experience working with full-time AFRL scientists and engineers on cutting-edge research and technology and are able to contribute to unique, research-based projects. AFRL Scholar internship opportunities are offered at several locations across the United States.

JHIBS is an 8-week summer program for high school students that helps them discover a career in the neurological sciences. High school juniors and seniors from the Baltimore city and metro areas are allowed to apply. The internship is held at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Department of Neurology on the East Baltimore campus. Over the 8-week period, interns will participate in a research project guided by faculty, staff, and student mentors and participate in clinical rotations with Johns Hopkins neurologists.
High school juniors and seniors from across the United States are invited to participate in a 5-week virtual summer research experience.

The Summer Research Internship (SURI) program provides the opportunity for highly motivated high school students to work with and learn from a multidisciplinary team of scientists. Students will conduct an independent research project with a mentor. The primary aim of the internship program is to train and prepare young scientists to become future leaders in the realm of translational science. The internship runs from June 3 – August 9, 2024, OR June 17 – August 23, 2024, or write specific dates on the application form (10 weeks).

The Geosciences Bridge Program is offered by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. During the 6-week paid internship, students will be introduced to ocean sciences, atmospheric sciences, and geographic information systems (GIS)/Remote Sensing techniques. The internship will be hosted on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore campus. The program will run from June to August.

The program is designed to serve students from populations underrepresented in biomedical and clinical research in the summer after their senior year in high school. Selected participants will be paired with a research mentor. Research projects may involve laboratory-based research, computer-based database research, or clinical research. Students will learn about research methodology and will complete a project over the summer months. They will present their findings in oral presentation sessions. High school students who are applying must have completed their senior year by the program’s start date.
The application deadline is February 2024, but the program suggests students apply earlier due to rolling admission.
This program aims to expose high school students to cutting-edge research in an academic environment and introduce them to the diversity of research topics in engineering. Projects will be mentored by students, faculty, and staff of the Stanford Compression Forum and its affiliated organizations. Themes will span and combine the science of information and communication, engineering, the arts, linguistics, psychology, biology, neuroscience, computer science, technology, philosophy, and design, among other areas. High school students must be current high school juniors or seniors by the time of the application. The program is 8 weeks long, starting from June 13 to August 15, 2022.

The RSI invites high school students to participate in the five-week internship program at MIT. Students will experience the research cycle, read the most current literature in their field, draft and execute a detailed research plan, and deliver conference-style oral and written reports on their findings. Students will be paired with a mentor, take lessons for 1 week, and do research for 5 weeks.

MITRE is a not-for-profit organization committed to bringing innovative ideas into existence in areas. 9th and 10th-grade students interested in the STEM field are encouraged to apply for this summer internship. Students will work on projects ranging from research, development, engineering, and analysis while learning how to discover, create, and lead in the science, engineering, technology, and mathematics fields.

The AFRL Scholars Program provides paid internships for college and graduate students studying STEM, as well as high school students, where they can work with AFRL scientists and engineers on advanced research and technology projects and gain practical experience.

The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program is a program for high school students interested in the field of fisheries biology. It provides hands-on educational experiences and training in fish and aquatic ecology, as well as fisheries management and conservation. Participants have the opportunity to work alongside scientists and researchers in a variety of settings, including field stations, research vessels, and laboratories. Students will receive a $3,000 stipend and an all-expense paid trip to the Hutton Scholars Summit.

The Laboratory Learning Program at Princeton University is a program for high school students that provides hands-on training in various scientific research fields such as biology, chemistry, physics, computer science and engineering. The program offers students an opportunity to work with Princeton researchers and graduate students in state-of-the-art labs and research centers. For this year, students can participate in engineering and natural science opportunities.

Computer Science
The Summer Academy is an externship opportunity for students to learn about the day-to-day operations of Facebook. Externs will work closely with Facebook Mentors in their respective capacities to gain real-world work experience and on-the-job skills that will help propel them into successful careers. Applicants must be sophomores in high school by the time of the application. Applicants must be full-year residents of either East Palo Alto, Belle Haven, North Fair Oaks, or Redwood City. Students need to submit 2 essay questions, a transcript (including 1st-semester grades from 10th grade), and a Recommendation Form.

Microsoft High School Program offers students a high school computer science internship. Students will participate in projects to explore what they love to do, while exploring Microsoft’s unique culture. The program is open to current senior high school students living within 50 miles of Redmond, Washington, with a demonstrated interest in technology. Students must be at least 16 years old and have a legal right to work in the U.S. for the duration of the internship. Applicants should be available to work full-time for 10 consecutive weeks .

Tech Apprentice is a summer internship program that lasts six to seven weeks and is open to high school students from Boston Public Schools who are interested in technology. The program gives students the opportunity to work at local companies. It is designed for students who are considering studying IT in college and want hands-on experience in the tech industry.

Graduating high school seniors (incoming college freshmen) can apply to this 4-week program to learn about computer science, develop their technical skills, build confidence in their abilities, and better prepare themselves to study computer science or closely related fields.

Arts & Humanities
For students who are residing or attending a high school in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut, this is the opportunity for you! The Met High School Internship Program offers paid opportunities for students who are interested in art and art history. Students will gain work experience while being mentored by arts, creative, and museum professionals. By the end of the internship, students will receive a stipend that is commensurate with New York State minimum wage law. Students must be rising juniors or rising seniors on the application deadline.

Benjamin Lawless Internship is an opportunity for a rising senior high school student to learn about audience engagement, exhibition design, and research stories associated with objects of all kinds and the people who used and created them.
Shirley Ann Jackson Science Internship & Robert P. Kogod Arts Internship are for District of Columbia public high school students entering their junior or senior year or finishing their senior year. There are two full-time internships. One internship is awarded to a student interested in science and another is awarded to a student interested in the arts. Awarded students spend eight (8) weeks with their mentors in and around the Smithsonian facilities in the Washington DC area.
National Museum of Natural History Internships offers high school students opportunities to be mentored crossing all of our areas of expertise, including natural history research, collections management, education and outreach, information technologies, public engagement, communications, development, administration and management, and even facilities operation.
The Claudine K. Brown Internship in Education is committed to helping students develop a deeper interest in the field of education and museum leadership. Interns are placed in offices, museums, and research centers throughout the Smithsonian Institution, where they will help to create, develop, and disseminate innovative educational programs and resources at the Smithsonian, online, in the classroom, and in communities.
Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) offers high school students who are at least 16 years old to participate in one of the following divisions: Professional Services or Curriculum & Communications. Students with an interest in science, education, or business are encouraged to apply.
Law
The Thurgood Marshall Summer Law Internship Program places diverse New York City public high school students with legal employers for the summer. Job assignments in firms vary depending on the needs of the employer, but typically include assisting paralegals, filing, record keeping, assisting library and back-office personnel, data entry, and document and exhibit organization.

This law internship for high school students provides an insider’s view of the criminal justice system. Interns will be paired with a staff member to receive guidance and support. Interns have the chance to participate in workshops and discuss criminal justice, police brutality, civic engagement, leadership, and more. Applicants must live in or attend school in Manhattan. Applicants must be sophomores, juniors, or seniors at the time they apply.

The New York Historical Society Education Division provides students with the opportunities to conduct teen-led research on undertold yet highly relevant histories. During the 6-week internship, students will work with historian mentors and take trips to history archives around the city to help support their work. The internship is open to high school students, entering grades 10, 11, or 12.

Nonprofit, Volunteer + Service
Through this program, community-minded high schoolers receive experience in serving their communities through a paid eight-week internship with nonprofits like Boys and Girls Clubs of America and Habitat for Humanity. They also get to see how nonprofits, governments, and businesses collaborate to meet local needs by participating in the National Student Leaders Summit in Washington, D.C.

KP LAUNCH is a unique summer internship experience that is part of Kaiser Permanente’s investment in the future of health care. During the 6-week internship, high school students will work in administrative and supporting roles in the health care environments. Students are required to have a permanent residence in a Northern California Kaiser Permanente designated service area. Students must be aged 16 through 19 and are currently attending high school.
Program Date: June 17th – August 2nd
The program aims to provide on-the-job training and real-world leadership development experiences in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), data analysis, and market/scientific research. There are 8 projects in varied fields offered by IALR. Candidates must be high school graduates with plans to attend college in fall 2023.
