Biology

Introduce student(s) to biology, focusing on biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, DNA, and gene expression. Students should be able to discuss, display what they know/have learned through writing short reflections, and take short quizzes the next session. This is done to check that the student is comprehending and retaining the information. After completing this course, students should be able to apply newly learned concepts to classroom situations with ease.

Class Introduction

This introductory course will cover the material a student might expect to see in a first year high school biology class. We will address all scales of the subject, from biochemistry and cell biology through evolution and ecology. We will also focus on developing scientific skills like asking scientific questions, designing experiments, and analyzing data. We will use a variety of learning modalities to address these topics, including virtual labs, hands-on labs using household objects, mini-debates, and interactive lectures.

Outcome

During our time together, we will work toward mastery of the material covered in a typical high school biology class. Students will also work to develop an understanding of science as a process, an ability to work effectively in small groups, and a deeper appreciation of the role the natural world plays in our daily lives.
